Former firefighter and Labour councillor for Brinsworth and Catcliffe ward Cllr Alan Buckley became the new Mayor of Rotherham today. Cllr Alan Buckley was sworn in at the annual ceremony in the Town Hall earlier this afternoon which takes place each year to elect the new Mayor. He takes over the role from Cllr Eve Rose Keenan who carried out the Mayor role for the previous year.
Each Mayor has the opportunity to chose three Rotherham charities which will benefit from the Mayor’s fundraising during their year in the role. As a former fighter, Cllr Alan Buckley has chosen the Fire Fighters Charityas one of his chosen charities. The Firefighters Charity provides support to firefighters and their families who may have suffered or endured any issues or injuries in their duty. This also includes rehabilitation and health and well-being services to ensure the recovery of any firefighters in their health or other needs.
Another charity to benefit from the Mayor’s fundraising is Rotherham Headway, an organisation that supports individuals with head or brain injuries. The other beneficiary will be Dr Ted children’s appeal for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Centre which supports children and young people during their stay in hospital by raising money for toys and necessary medical equipment.
Cllr Alan Buckley will be the Mayor of Rotherham for 2018-2019 with Cllr Jenny Andrews (Hellaby ward) becoming the new Deputy Mayor for the year ahead as well.
