Deputy Leader of Rotherham Council, Cllr Gordon Watson, has written to Gavin Williamson to demand that he urgently answer outstanding questions after the government’s handling of school reopening led to chaos for parents, pupils and school staff.

In his role as Lead Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Watson has asked the Secretary of State for Education for clarity on school closures, for school staff to be given priority for vaccination, and for this summer’s exams to be replaced by controlled assessments.

Cllr Watson wrote:

“By taking these three steps: giving local authorities reliable information so they can plan for any necessary school closures, ensuring that school staff are prioritised for vaccinations so that more schools can remain open, and by making proper plans now to scrap this summer’s planned exams, the government would go a long way towards giving certainty to worried families and salvaging the best possible outcomes for all our children and young people.”
