Rotherham has entered 2018 welcoming great news regarding the economic and business performance of the borough. A recently published report has found that Rotherham is the fastest growing city economy in Yorkshire and is the 8th fastest in the UK.
The UK Powerhouse report, a study by law firm Irwin Mitchell and the Centre for Economics and Business Research, states that Rotherham enjoyed 1.8% growth in the third quarter of 2017. This performance gives the borough a league table ranking of 8th in the reports’ Powerhouse Table table for Q3 in 2017.
Councillor Chris Read, Labour Leader of Rotherham Council, responding to the report has said that this performance is: “A real credit to the partnership we’ve built, the investors who’ve come here and those who’ve backed borough projects for a long time.”
Councillor Denise Lelliott, Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy at Rotherham Council, has also said in response that: “Rotherham’s ambition is to create the right conditions for growth and regeneration and these results give confidence to businesses looking to invest in jobs, homes and developments within Rotherham.”
There have been many recent exciting announcements made in relation to economic and business activity in the borough. In Rotherham we have seen announcements such as: the investment of firms like Boeing and McLaren at the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation District bringing more jobs and apprenticeships; the building and development of a new higher education campus in the town centre and the publication last year of the town-centre regeneration and redevelopment plans as well.
The Irwin Mitchell UK Powerhouse report also forecasts that Rotherham will enjoy further growth performance of 1.4% in the fourth quarter in 2018. You can read the full response from Rotherham Council to this report here.
