Cllr Chris Read, Labour Leader of Rotherham Council, has announced new changes to the Cabinet at Rotherham Council. A new Cabinet member has been promoted taking responsibility for a newly created post on the environment. Other slight changes have been made to existing Cabinet positions as well, with the Deputy Leader now taking charge over Neighbourhood Working.
The new Cabinet member is Cllr Sarah Allen, elected in the all-out council elections in 2016 representing Wingfield ward, and she will oversee the newly titled post ‘Cleaner, Greener Communities’ with Cllr Taiba Yasseen now leaving the Cabinet. This portfolio will cover Streetpride services, including street cleansing, libraries, leisure services and parks.
In addition to this new appointment to the Cabinet, Cllr Gordon Watson, Deputy Leader of Rotherham Council, will now oversee Neighbourhood Working as well. This covers how councillors engage in their wards and local communities which has seen major reforms in the past year, with a move towards ward based community engagement. This new commitment will be undertaken alongside his existing responsibilities for Children’s Services too.
Cllr Chris Read, commenting on these changes to the Cabinet, has said:
“I am pleased to be able to ask Cllr Allen to take on responsibility for an area of the council’s work that we know is very important to the community.
I would like to thank Cllr Yasseen for her commitment and dedication, leading our work to introduce the new arrangements to support councillors in their community activity, as well as actively championing culture and leisure activities. As Deputy Leader, Cllr Watson is ideally placed to continue the important work of changing how we engage with our communities.”
